The OT is a specially fabricated frame developed by NASA to carry the Space Shuttle Orbiters over roads. The Space Shuttle Endeavour Transport Equipment consisted of the Overland Transporter (OT) attached to four self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT). The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power actually raised the majority of their power lines weeks ahead of the move. Other utility lines were relocated or temporarily moved to clear the path of the Shuttle. Four key overhead utility lines, ranging from 240 kV and 66 kV, were located within two miles of each other. Overhead lines were cleared in the days prior to the move, but others in coordination with utility companies such as Southern California Edison, were raised as the Shuttle passed by in order to prevent power outages within the community. After selection of a path, the Transport Contractor, Sarens Rigging International worked closely with all team members to further avoid large mature trees and utility poles. A path was developed that decreased the number of obstructions that needed to be cleared by 50 percent in comparison to a street centerline path. The priorities were to avoid as many trees and utility poles as possible. was enlisted to provide high definition 3D Laser Scanning services and produce a list of all obstructions within the dimensions of the Space Shuttle Endeavour traveling along the street centerline. We had several iterations along the way,” said Roberto Ramirez, P.E., Cordoba’s Senior Project Manager in charge of the transport project. “One may say we moved a six-story building with a wingspan of 80 feet, so our challenge was finding the appropriate path for the shuttle to minimize the amount of obstructions. The engineering challenge was to validate the selected route and locate the centerline path of the Shuttle to minimize the overall impact to the communities. Given the 80-foot buffer needed to safely transport the Shuttle, certain street fixtures and overhead lines required temporary removal. The street cross sections along the route ranged in width from 70 feet to 90 feet curb face to curb face. The team verified the proposed route and documented all of the temporary clearance work needed along the busy 12-mile urban corridor from LAX through the cities of Inglewood and Los Angeles. A large collaboration of team members which included the California Science Center, Cordoba Corporation, Parsons, Valley Crest, the cities of Los Angeles and Inglewood, and other experts, spent 18 months preparing for Endeavour’s complex journey. To make way for the massive orbiter, utility overhead lines, street lights, traffic signals and trees were moved and subsequently restored. Space Shuttle Endeavour is approximately 122 feet long, with a wingspan of 78 feet, and a height of 58 feet to the top of its tail. The transport of the space shuttle to its new home at the California Science Center on October 12-14 2012 marked its 26th and final mission.
